Water Coolers: Is there Fluoride in your Bottled water?

This is a very common question asked to our sales department by new customers we wanted to present the research on why there is Fluoride in water. Here’s what we found.
To start with, Fluoride is the 13th most abundant element on the earth’s crust. It is a chemical ion of the element fluorine – fluoride has one extra electron that gives it a negative charge. Fluoride is found naturally in soil, water, foods, and several minerals, such as fluorapatite and fluorite.
In some parts of the world, fresh water contains fluoride levels which are dangerous and can lead to health problems. Fluoride is also synthesized in laboratories. Synthesized fluoride is commonly added to drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwashes and various chemical products.

Water authorities add fluoride to tap-water because they claim it reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in the local population. In the early 1930s, scientists found that people who were brought up in areas with naturally fluoridated water had up to two-thirds fewer cavities compared to those who lived in areas where the water was not fluoridated. Several studies since then have repeatedly shown that when fluoride is added to people’s drinking water in areas where levels are low, tooth decay decreases.

Following on from these reports and the establishment of the Irish Fluorine Consultative Council which recommend a fluoridation level at 1 mg/l of public water supplies, the Department of Health implemented the practice of fluoridation across the entire water public water supplies (then accessed by 50% of the Irish population) in the late 1950’s. This was felt to be a much cheaper way of improving the quality of children’s teeth than employing more dentists. This practice has continued to today where Ireland is now the only country in the whole of the EU that still practices fluoridation of the mains drinking water.
